SAVE SOME FOR DADDY @ BAR BROADWAY 2nd AUGUST 2003 |
|
|
Lets go backwards for this one, Closing the night were rockers A.D.D,
With no drum kit or amps on stage, the guys plugged straight into the
desk through simulators, the band consisted of a keyboard, bass and
guitar, male vocals with guest \female vocals throughout the night,
They're energy was good with both the guitarist and bass player jumping
off stage and covering the whole venue with their wireless setups
throughout the show. I like that in a band. The Middle Band on the night
was really good, though I didn't get their name, forgive me but I was
Blown away by the opening act SAVE SOME FOR DADDY, In one of the
best live shows I have ever seen, Save Some For Daddy played to only a
couple of dozen people. They opened the night with their title song
'Save some for daddy' then went on to play a power packed set with songs
such as 'Little punk Ditty'. Their style is a cross over of many genres,
yet their blend is is not harsh, each style subtlety melding into it's
own. Dynamic is probably an appropriate word to use at this point, a
mate said to me somewhere during the Third song, "fuck man, this is
what a rock band should look like", he was making comment on
their awesome stage presence, other bands may jump and move around but
the members of S.S.F.D had a natural style to their movements that don't
come just by watching your favorite pop artist on T.V, you can really
see the electricity between these guys. Their guitarist caught my
attention with his brilliant playing. Their Bass player has a reputation
that precedes him and he lived up to it wholely (it's worth noting that
at some stage bass player Austin, was playing with 'The Porkers'). Their
singer had natural charisma "I need some water....." he
sleepily said once in between a song, "......or maybe just some
bodies daughter." ....Perhaps it's lack of experience or musical
knowledge but my review on this band and my attempts to explain the exhilaration
created on the night from S.S.F.D can only fall short of the truth, this
band was awesome, my friends thought it was awesome, the sound guy
thought it was awesome, everyone in the room I think felt the same way.
Bar Broadway should also get a mention in the fact that their stage
setup, sound and lighting is one of the best in Sydney. If you haven't
been to this venue in the last couple of years it's probably worth
checkn' out. Anyway Great gig, I almost feel sorry for the other bands
who had to play on the night. "Stick around for A.D.D......"
guitarist Pablo said towards the end of the S.S.F.D set,
"....They'll be closing for us tonight." And he words couldn't
have been more true. ROCK.

| FINGERPRINT RESISTANT @ THE KELTS BAR BLAXLAND 10th JULY 2003. | |

First of all I must tell of how I was blown away by the venue itself from the moment I entered the pub, a central bar in the middle of the room dominated with a good sized deep set stage in the front corner. The Pub was rock and roll, nice pool tables too, The only thing I could pick wrong with the joint is that they don't sell Carlton draught on tap but the V.B was a nice change anyway. Should be more venues like this. Enter 'A Small Victory', I didn't think I was gonna get to carried away with this band when they started, due to the un-warmed up highish vocals but the vocals got better and so did the band the longer they played, They interacted well on stage and looked to be enjoying themselves, with bucket loads of enthusiasm, by the end of their set they're brand of live rock/soft punk had my appreciation. Now Fingerprint Resistant weren't the headlining act but they were the band I came to see, after listening to their nine track demo and hearing rumors about they're live shows for some time now, my expectations were high, believe everything you hear about this band, If they were around, they could have easily supported Metellica in 84' or Nirvana in 91', not that they sound like those bands, but simply because this three piece outfit Rocks. Great heavy rock with charming guitar riffs, fulfilling bass and a sick ass drummer who also manages to nail and deliver emotional vocal melodies that could stand against time. Great backup vocals at the right times and all nicen' and tight, this is one band I'll definitely see again. Rock and Fuckin Roll, Yeah!!!! I only caught a couple of 'Spud Gun's songs after the 'Fingerprint Resistant' set finished cause I made my way to the pool tables for a quick game then headed off for a train ride home, but what I saw was good, I didn't see 'Save Some For Dady' who headlined the night, but what I was hearing in murmur throughout the venue, they're said to be an awesome band, with a notable bass player. One to catch in the future me thinks.

| HORROR NIGHT @ THE ANNANDALE HOTEL 05/07/03 | |
|
The first band on the night, 'Mz Ann Thropik', was an all girl gothic punk bank that sounded a bit like Christian Death. Its great to see local all girl bands, I have been following American all girl bands and Im really impressed with this genre of music at the moment. The second band was interesting. They were more performers then musicians. It was entertaining, it makes me think that bands have to do alot more these days to get noticed. Remember the days where bands just turned up plugged in and looked cool, well no more. You have to have an angle. Zombie Ghost Train were great as always, they seem to be going from strength to strength. They have nice clean sounds, which for live alternative music is refreshing. There were a few stomping their boots to the music up the front near the stage. I think that we have not seen the best of these boys yet. I think more and more people will get along to see these lads as word spreads.

THE LUST PUPPETS & THE ALL ORDINARIES @ THE HARP HOTEL, TEMP 29/06/03 |
|
| A great night
which started of with The All Ordinaries taking the stage with some
country'ish style rock songs, their pace quickened as the night went on
with a mixture of originals and covers, This band rocks and they had the
crowd to prove it. By the end of their set they were churning out some
wicked rock songs, the talent in this band in Awesome beyond doubt and
if your up for a good night out, track this band down. The Lust Puppets
rocked on afterwards and gave out their best on the night, playing some
brand new songs they had just got down as well as playing all their
crowds favorites, Lucky punters who were going hard on the night were
being given out free copies of they're new c.ds, putting many smiles on
many faces.

| TOURETTES
@ THE ANNANDALE HOTEL 26/06/03

Sydney Metalers ‘Neo Ezy’ opened the night, the vocals were mixed to low but I dug the way the singer could go from a mouse squeak to a death roar, the band itself seemed to be lacking something and later we found the drummer on the night was just filling in for their usual drummer which is never an easy job, never the less their set was appreciated and paved the way for Brisbane band ‘Japunga’, Catching only half their set, I've got to say these guys rock, a wicked rhythm section held together the tight vocals and heavy guitars, this is one band that is worth seeing again and I believe their in Sydney again around the 18th of July so keep an eye out for them. Enter Tourettes, there was much anticipation amongst the punters as the first live Tourettes show in nine months was about to be unleashed, One by one the members took the stage and somehow all different, they looked so right for each other. Playing songs from their latest album ‘Detestimony’ as well as their previous self titled album, they soon had punters entranced. Tourettes have really got presence and Michelle Madden on stage becomes larger than life, playing the set with emotion and grind which some other bands should take note of. Songs like ‘kill Em All’ and ‘Chair’ rocked the house with Michelle making the bar a natural extension of the stage. Her alternating vocals and Ashley Manning’s echoing guitar sound, in songs like ‘Damage’, managed to pull the emotive chords of most punters and the rhythm section of the band comprising of Mick Quigs hidden away behind the drums and Ross Empson on bass, had some punters in an uncontrollable frenzy throughout. It’s always good when the band looks as though they’re as happy to be there as the punters. I also noticed that the merchandise desk was swamped after the gig with the new album ‘Detestimony’, t-shirts, bandanas and the like, flying through the register. This was an awesome night, and it seemed all in the crowd got what they were after. Reviewed by TINN TIN |

| ZOMBIE GHOST TRAIN @ THE EMPIRE HOTEL ANNANDALE. 31/05/03 | |
|
To start with the crowd were a mixture of punters and monsters dressed as punters, a projection screen was set up next to the stage and played an assortment of b/w horror films which helped set the scene for what was to be a memorable night. THE OPTIONALS started off the four band line up with rocking tunes and some catchy melodies, psycobilly extraordinaires, SLANT 6 came next and rocked the crowd with hits such as Shark Attack and Zombie girl, worth seeing again, I believe INTERCONTINENTAL PLAYBOYS followed but I can't say much about them as I was down the street infesting my body with Macca's at the time. When ZOMBIE GHOST TRAIN, took to the stage, the crowd gathered with an air of expectation. I couldn't tell you their song list except that they finished up with devil child. An all out effort from the boys celebrating the release of 'Monster Formal Wear' which is their first e.p. From their make up and onstage double base acrobatics to their rocking psycobilly tunes, Z.G.T had their audience in a positive uproar, a must see for any punters who likes their live music rocking. Z.G.T left no one in the room disappointed and were without a doubt the standout band on the night. Reviewed by TINN TIN.
